The GLP-1 weight loss drug Semaglutide, known as Wegovy for obesity and Ozempic for diabetes, helps lower blood sugar levels and control appetite. For people who are overweight or obese, the drug can lead to significant weight loss.

People living with HIV are the latest beneficiaries of a new generation of anti-obesity drugs, a recent conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic

Infections reported. Semaglutide can reduce the weight and fat accumulation associated with antiretroviral therapy, thereby stopping the spread of HIV.

The number of people living with HIV who are overweight or obese is increasing, and patients are beginning to become interested in semaglutide,

while some patients have been treated with semaglutide or other similar drugs.

In a presentation on March 4, the Center for Integrated Clinical Systems Research Network for HIV reported that 222 patients treated with Semaglutide

lost an average of 6.5 kilograms of weight within one year, equivalent to 5.7 percent of their initial body weight.

In addition, studies have shown that semaglutide has a significant effect on reducing fatty liver disease in people living with HIV,

and that participants who took semaglutide had a nearly 40% decrease in the blood inflammation marker C-reactive protein compared with study participants

who did not take semaglutide. This could be an important effect for patients with Semiglutide, because even well-controlled HIV can lead to a chronic

inflammatory state, and increased inflammation can lead to a wide variety of end-organ diseases, including cardiovascular disease,

but also liver, kidney, brain, cognitive function, and more.

In summary, Semaglutide can not only help HIV infected people lose weight, but also reduce the accumulation of fat and related chronic inflammation

caused by HIV. This suggests that people living with HIV may benefit from GLP-1 weight loss drugs.
